A few months back, I announced that I would be stopping work of the GameTrailers.com RSS app for Boxee due to personal issues. Realizing I was being a total wuss and had a nice thing people liked, I decided it was time to bring it back to life. Only one thing: It isn’t the same as before.
Previously, I discussed how the GameTrailers.com RSS feeds can are manipulated to output just about any kind of media from the GameTrailers.com web site for use in your Boxee application. Pulling in the feed into your Boxee app is just one thing as the feed itself is also just as powerful with gobs of juicy information just waiting to be displayed in your app. Read more…
The heart and soul of GameTrailers.com RSS is its RSS Feed (hence the “RSS” in the app’s title). And that RSS Feed is much easier to manipulate than one may think.
That pretty much sums up the status of the next version of GameTrailers.com RSS.
When testing new versions of Boxee apps, I make it a point to do so locally and not save anything to live servers. So, I enable the <test-app> tag in my Boxee apps and store them directly in the apps folder of Boxee’s Application Support folder. It’s quick and easy and does what I need.
While installing the latest version of the Boxee Beta, I felt I needed to do a clean install since it’s been a while since I’ve done so. This meant removing any and all Boxee files, folders, and support files. You might see where this is going.
For those that were unable to add GameTrailers.com RSS to the My Apps section, this bug has been fixed. There was a version mismatch issue between the one in the app’s descriptor.xml and the repository’s index.xml.
After feeling pretty confident getting a Boxee RSS App working, I figured I’d take on something a little more daunting: creating a Boxee Python App.
I decided to do an ABC News app after seeing ABC 7 News in the App Box. Since ABC 7 an Owned and Operated (O&O) affilate, this would give me a wonderful starting point. I figured if this is able to play video just fine on one of the O&O affiliates, it should work fine on all the others since they’re all the same design and layout (just about).
